New Movie About Blockchain To Hit The Theatres Today In Hollywood

Hollywood is looking at its first feature length documentary, on blockchain technology, to open today Oct 26, at Cinema Village in New York City. Directed by 80s actor-turned-documentary maker Alex Winter, this movie promises to set itself apart from other tech movies by putting aside the technical jargon of crypto and actually focusing on the political aspect of the technology.

The movie, called Trust Machine: The Story of Blockchain, will ideally focus on how the technology being disruptive to traditional sectors, is a legitimate scare for governments and traditional financial institutions like banks.

According to reports, the film will focus on the profound socio-economic implications of the technology and its role in resolving issues like migration of refugees and offering an alternative economoc opportunity to those who lack access to traditional financial services. The feature length film is narrated by actress Rosario Dawson, best known for her roles in Marvel’s Daredevil on Netflix.

The film’s story follows Lauri Love, a British cyberpunk activist, computer scientist and a celebrated hacker, who is accused by the NSA, the U.S. Army and the Missile Defense Agency of stealing sensitive data from their databases, by hacking into it. He also awaits a potential extradition to the U.S. for his role in certain illicit online activities that caused the persecution and untimely death of Aaron Swartz.

Back in 2015, Winter directed a documentary called Deep Web, which explored the dark web and in particular, the success of the Silk Road, which is a virtual marketplace where buyers use untraceable cryptocurrencies to pay for drugs, stolen credit cards and guns. The authorities constantly pursue these offenders but its a clear struggle to look for the person behind the screen.

Winter has spoken in full support of blockchain. He has commented,

“Naysayers have two groups: one says all of it is BS, and a scam, and a fraud, and then a slightly more nuanced group says a lot of it is scams, but the verifiable ledgers are a natural evolution of the internet. Some folks believe blockchain will save the universe. I don’t agree with the group that thinks its bullshit. They are uneducated.”

The film looks like it could be a success and tell a more nuanced story about the technology. Well here ‘s a glimpse of the trailer of the movie. Take a look and decide for yourself.
